SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Dealing with chronic tendinopathy that just won’t go away?

Had multiple therapy sessions and the same issue continues to return no matter how much rest you give it when you return to activity/sport?

Has calcification been found in your tendon(s)?

Shockwave therapy may be the answer! Read on.

What is Shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment using high intensity, mechanical energy pulses that are transmitted into the injured tissue. These energy pulses have a high frequency and short duration. These pulses aggravate the injured tissues (tendons, ligaments, muscles, etc.) at the cellular level which ultimately stimulates a healing response.

How does Shockwave Therapy work?

The force created by these high intensity energy pulses transmitted by the shockwave has been shown to be extremely effective in breaking down scar tissue and calcification.

Is Shockwave Therapy effective?

In short, YES! In breaking down scar tissue and calcification, there can be drastic increases in function, mobility and provides almost immediate relief from pain. Shockwave Therapy ultimately accelerates the healing process by stimulating metabolism and increases blood flow to repair the damaged tissue.

Shockwave Therapy purposely induces an inflammatory response to allow your body to heal itself and regenerate healthy tissue as a result

What can I expect during my Shockwave Therapy session?

There may be some discomfort during your treatment session which will depend on the sensitivity of your injury. Your therapist can adjust the intensity of the therapy if pain is experienced to promote an analgesic effect at the start of your treatment.

Many people experience a decrease or a complete absence in pain immediately after their shockwave treatment. There may be some soreness 1-2 hours after treatment since shockwave purposely causes an inflammation process to induce the cascade of healing at the cellular level. It’s important to remember that this is normal and it is your body’s way of healing itself and regenerating healthy tissue.

Long term pain relief and tissue healing can be expected after only a short number of treatments. The exact number of sessions needed can be identified and discussed after a thorough assessment with your therapist.
